Israel’s assault on Gaza has continued into a sixth day, and the death toll has risen to more than 400 people.
According to Israel, it is targeting Hamas’ military infrastructure, such as rocket launchers and rocket factories. Also under attack are what the Israeli military calls “suspected hideouts” that, for some, are the most disputed targets, because almost anything can be suspected as a hiding place for weapons or Hamas fighters.
In practice, government buildings, mosques, the Islamic university of Gaza and a refugee camp have come under attack.
After Israel’s subjecting Gaza to an aerial pounding for several consecutive days, many Gazans are asking if police stations and government buildings have been, what are now the targets for the continuing bombardment?
Many Gazans feel that they themselves are the targets. The Israeli authorities have been accessing the phone networks and making automated calls telling the people of Gaza to leave their homes as an attack in their area is imminent, and this is creating a climate of fear and despair, as the people are unable to travel north into Israel and they are unable to travel south into Egypt as the borders are closed, and to their West they are bordered by the sea.
The difficulty for both the Israeli military and the Gaza residents is: The entire Gaza Strip is just 10 km wide and 40 km long and has a population of one and a half million, which makes it one of the most densely populated spots on earth. Civilian casualties are unavoidable.
Today’s Inside Story presenter Nick Clark is joined by Raanan Gissen, a former Israeli Defense Force official and senior advisor to former Prime Minister Ariel Sharon; Elias Hanna, a retired army general and military analyst; and Ehab Bessaiso, a lecturer in political communications at Cardiff University.

ISRAEL IS JUSTIFIED:
2005: Israel returned the Gaza strip to the Palestinians in exchange for peaceful coexistance. UN was overjoyed. HAMAS got elected–their charter calls for the killing of all Jews and destroying the state of Israel. Real nice huh?! HAMAS started using Gaza as a staging ground for terrorism against Israel, the nation that is feeding them. Nice huh?!
Remember the V-1 missiles Germany shot into UK in WWII? Same thing. Germany got bombed into the stone age.

This is Israel politics! 1. they are trying to scare Palestinian voters in order to elect Fatah on next elections 2. Elections are following next month in Israel and they seriously rely on nationalist voters. 3. They re getting last train in bush presidency to do that, ‘couse they don’t know what barak obama will say about all this carnage, and 4: they need to sustain conflict in order to keep on military state in full power. They need enemy , gaza is like baby enemy incubator. very sad :(

So let us cut the bull-shit. The people of gaza have made their choice, they want war with israel. They will provoke israel to wage war with them if necessary and now they have it in spadesfull. Of course, hamas would play the line of “innocent women and children” dying, any guerilla would use public opinion to his advantage. That however is a line you sell to people who do not know. But to people who have been in the styx waging war do not sell us that line.

Any guerilla and any counter-insurgency operator would know that a guerilla is only as good as his mass base. Without a mass base a guerilla leaves the area. The Hamas is in Gaza because the palestinians in gaza want them there. The way they wage war against israel is the way the palestinians in gaza would want them to wage war. It is not only hamas who believe that israel does not have a right to exist, all of gaza believes the same. All gaza wants to rain rockets down on israel.
